Want to check out Cusco, but not be hassled by all the thousands of fellow travelers reveling in Machu Picchu magic? Find a space of modero Do n serenity in Wayqey Hotel to decompress before you embark on your grand adventure to the ancient Incan Citadel. With nearly 350,000 residents in Cusco and thousands of tourists each day, this bustling city never lacks livelihood. The night life, ‘fiesta’ scene is ready and raring to go all 7 nights a week. But what about getting that needed sleep before embarking on the long journey to one of the wonders of the world? Well here is where Wayqey Hotel has you covered!
Located less than 2km from the San Blas and historic districts, Wayqey is situated in a quiet and safe neighborhood. Beautifully decorated, you can tell that the hotel’s management has a degree in art. From the beautiful murals in the stairwell to the perfectly picked pieces in each room, there is always something beautiful to look at. The open design of the building along with the blue and white patterns give hints to a sea shore oasis in the mountains. The only thing to remind you it’s not an oceanside getaway are the gorgeous views of the hills just outside the expansive room windows. If you’re up early, don’t forget to check out the 7th floor lounge at sunrise as it features 180 degree views of the city, and even has a partial balcony! If you’re not an early riser, don’t worry, you can check out the skyroom lounge during the included, and delectable breakfast. At night this area transforms into a lounge/bar complete with city lights for that perfect ambiance!
Opened only 9 months ago, this modern upscale hotel has all the amenities you could ask for! My favorite part is the firm yet giving mattresses that I have come to know the Wayqey group for. The stand up shower was large and both water temperature and pressure were fantastic. If you travel enough in Peru, you will come to learn this a luxury not a given. Technology wise the internet is the fastest and most reliable that we have seen. Lots of conveniently placed outlets in the rooms keep all your gadgets juiced up and ready to go. In the suites, you’ll find a cozy living area complete with big screen tv. A mini kitchenette, including a microwave, utensils, water broiler, and fridge also come along with the upgrade! Standard rates start at $117 for Superior Rooms and $142 for suites, but don’t forget to check out booking.com for rates as low as $65 for Superior and Suites around $80. There’s no doubt that this 4 star hotel is a fantastic deal and worth the price for the luxurious details and serenity!
When you do decide to get out and go explore the city, which is a must you, are only a 6-8 soles (2USD) cab ride from the main square which features 3 beautiful cathedrals. Want to get to the top of mountain for a panoramic view of the entire city? Check out Christo Blanco which is a smaller version of Christ the Redeemer, only 10soles (3USD) to get there. Getting antsy to see some ruins? Directly behind Christo Blanco, there is Saksayhuaman. These remarkable ancient boulders have been precisely fit and placed into wall formations without any sort of mortar. Not to mention that some weigh up to 200 tons! If you want to go, make sure to plan this as part of a tour as it will include 4 different sites and all the transportation for 20 soles more ($6 USD). Or if you’re really on a tight budget, you can see the site from afar at Christo Blanco.
In the main square, you will find the rest of the historic district. All of the touristy stuff, including pictures holding baby llamas, artists selling ‘one of a kind’ pieces, along with tons of restaurants and bars. Make sure to check out Los Perros for an extraordinary strawberry-mango smoothie. For an in depth experience exploring the beauty of the Peruvian drink, Pisco, head to the Museo del Pisco. It’s a brilliant option for trying any kind of pisco sour that you could imagine! For happy hour, we fell in love with La Taberna, featuring 2 for 1 drinks plus live local music around a cozy firepit. A little further up the hill in the San Blas district you will find a more chill nightlife, and the backpacker party scene. Our favorite dinner to date was the alpaca roll at the Sunset hostel restaurant. For Americans it would be the equivalent of having Peruvian Thanksgiving dinner. After you have gotten your food and drink on, let the party animals stay out way too late, while you take a quick ride back home to Wayqey so you can rest for another day of local adventures, or for the big one, Machu Picchu.
